Successful premiere at the new home port!
17,000 visitors followed Nils Landgren to the new venue of JazzBaltica and celebrated together with him the 28th edition of the festival. On the area around the beach park in Timmendorfer Strand from 22nd to 24th July greats like Lars Danielsson, Candy Dulfer and Randy Brecker performed. Also young artists like the IB.SH JazzAward winner David Grabowski or the Trio Saskya around Anna-Lena Schnabel, prizewinner from 2017.
All concerts on the MainStage in the festival hall of the Seehotel Maritim Timmendorfer Strand were sold out. Among them the performance of the JazzBaltica All Star Band, who played this year under the direction of the Norwegian trumpeter Hildegunn Øiseth. She conducted the women's ensemble with sensitivity through her own compositions and gave the soloists plenty of room to demonstrate their talent for improvisation. The "upptakt", which Nils Landgren designed together with the Agnas Bros in the JazzClub, located in the 73Bar des Maritim, was also sold out on Thursday. Also the concert of Elisabeth Engdahl & Thomas Gustafsson in the Waldkirche on Sunday.
The other 21 events were free and freely accessible, so that in addition to festival ticket holders, many passers-by spontaneously visited the JazzBaltica grounds. The JazzTalks at the JazzCafé in the Trinkkurhalle were just as enthusiastically and widely received as the concerts of various up-and-coming talents on the OpenAir stage next door. The adjacent beach park with beach chairs and hammocks offered many opportunities for picnics and lingering, which were gladly accepted. The stage @thebeach was also highly frequented: The open, warmly lit tent directly on the beach was surrounded by fire baskets - with Ulf & Eric Wakenius, among others, the audience experienced a very special concert atmosphere late in the evening.
In addition to the venue, a new feature this year was NDR Info's own JazzBaltica format: under the title 'Round Midnight', NDR Info presenter Sarah Seidel invited guests such as Ulf Wakenius, Donny McCaslin and Eva Kruse to the JazzClub at late hours. In addition to the conversations, live music was also performed. The 'Round Midnight' format will be recorded and delayed by NDR Info (broadcast on NDR Info from 10.05 p.m. on 23/24 June 2018).
JazzBaltica thanks the main sponsors Investitionsbank Schleswig-Holstein (IB.SH) and AUDI AG, the Festivalhotel Maritim Seehotel Timmendorfer Strand as well as the sponsors and partners like the Ulbrich Foundation Timmendorfer Strand, Wohnungsbau GmbH Neumünster, Minimax GmbH & Co. KG and gradwerk interaktive medien GmbH. In addition, the longstanding media partners NDR Info, Deutschlandfunk and ZDF are strengthening the festival. This year JazzBaltica is again generously supported by the community of Timmendorfer Strand-Niendorf. Special thanks also go to the State of Schleswig-Holstein for its generous support.
On 5 December Nils Landgren celebrates "Christmas with my friends" in the St. Bartholomäus Church in Wesselburen. Jonas Knutsson, Johan Norberg and Eva Kruse as well as the four singers Jeanette Köhn, Ida Sand, Jessica Pilnäs and Sharon Dyall are there.
