Kinan Azmeh & NDR Bigband:
Arabian Night – From Damascus to New York
In their constant search for new sounds, collaborations, and intensities, the NDR Bigband has experienced many things, but hardly any concert has left such an echo of enthusiasm as their performance in March 2017 at the Salam Syria Festival together with the highly virtuoso Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh. Born in 1976 in the Syrian capital Damascus, Azmeh studied the classical repertoire, completed his education in New York at the Juilliard School, and ultimately found his very own musical place always at the interface between musical cultures. Everywhere bridges are built between cultures and something like world treasures beyond cultural divides: east or west, classical or jazz, serious or popular. Whether with the sophisticated structure of his compositional ideas, his playing style in Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, or in various musical formations at the Morgenland Festival in Osnabrück, where Azmeh is a regular guest, he leads the audience through a whirl of emotions that dissolves into sheer happiness with the versatile tone of his clarinet, which encompasses every conceivable shade of emotion between exultant joy and abysmal shock.
